The Madness is ON!
Malbec Madness that is, tonight at the Dilly Deli in Mariemont
(I know, we still have one more week until the real madness, but this is sure to warm you up for that!)

Come out for some Malbec Madness with Kate, our Wine of Week guru, and gang at the Dilly Deli.
From the Dilly Deli:
'March Malbec Madness has started with 6 Malbecs featured by the glass tonight, and every night for the rest of the week! Or, you can create your own tasting flight of three 3oz glasses and compare as many as you like! We even have little Malbec Madness brackets if you and your friends want to have your own little malbec tournament! Tonight (Wednesday the 12th) is the true madness, the Big Dance as it were, when we open 24 Malbecs from all over the world for you to taste! Yes, twenty four, two dozen, twice ten plus four - that is NOT a typo! The fun begins at 6:30 and wraps up around 8:30... it's $25 per person and includes all the wine plus Malbec friendly food from our fabulous Chef Eric Vice. You can't beat it! Email, call or stop by to make your reservation. And if that doesn't work, just come on in anyway! The whole point of the reservation thing is to get an approximate count, not the absolute! If you can't make it to the giant Madness tasting, be sure to stop by for dinner this week because we'll have 6 Malbecs featured by the glass each night!'
Yep, this pretty much reminds me of my Giants superbowl celeration!
(Thanks to the super cool Mo Egger blog for this!)
Oh yeah, my Giants superbowl celebration...

I might have just read the best article ever written about Xavier outside of Cincinnati, it's from the NY Times. Go here to read. (Thanks to Lance's blog.)

Over the weekend I somehow ended up taking this picture...

...and I am going to submit it to the website this picture came from.

This story from today's Enquirer about a melee at the gas pumps really doesn't surprise me...

STAN THE MAN!
"It's ridiculous. This league is pathetic. We went 14-2, top 10 in the nation. Forget first team, Josh is probably the player of the year. You've got the best team and nobody on the first-team all-conference team? It's ridiculous. You talk about not having motivation? We got plenty now. I'm really looking forward to Atlantic City now."

No matter what you think of Stanley Burrell of Xavier, you'd be lying if you said you wouldn't want this guy on your team. Here is some of what he said yesterday regarding the coaches voting for the A-10 end of season awards: (From Dustin Dow's awesome NCAA blog.)
"I've never been so upset. You'd think after getting the awards I got, I'd be happy right now. I'm really upset about how things turned out. I called this after the Dayton game, and no disrespect to Brian Roberts, but I said things like this are going to happen; we're going to be left out. I've got champions in that locker room. B.J., C.J., Derrick. Those guys shouldn't have been left out like that. No way. Those guys are champs. Where would we be without them. I'm so upset."
"I should be happy right now. I got a good award and that's great. But my teammates got left out. No way. I'm the leader of this team, and I'm not going to sit here and say it's OK. I know how I'd feel if I got left out like that if I gave for the good of the team; if I sacrificed and was all about doing what's best for the team. I'm so upset, so upset."
"You see the teams and you're like, put B.J. in place of a Darnell Harris or somebody who went .500 or below. Put Derrick in place of a Bryant Dunston. You don't leave C.J. out. You don't leave guys out who just won a championship. Those guys could easily go to other teams and easily be getting 14, 15, 16 points a game. They decided to be here and play team ball. And they get left out for that? For being unselfish? It's not right, man. I don't care what I got. That Defensive Player of the Year? That's my team's award."
"I can't believe my team got left out like that. I'm happy for Coach; hell, he should have been Coach of the Year last year too. We won the league last year too. It's ridiculous. I'm sick of people overlooking us. I'm sick of us being labeled as a mid-major; we don't get no respect, man. And we're going to keep winning. We're going to stay together and keep doing what we do. We're going to stay focused, and we're not going to let people take us off our path. I feel bad for my teammate [nudging Raymond who was sitting next to him] because he deserved it. He bought out this year. He deserved to be recognized for his play this year. Where would we be without B.J.? Where would we be without C.J.? Where would we be without Derrick? Thost guys should be recognized, and I'm trying to hold myself together, but I love those guys to death. They did everything for us this year. They sacrificed like crazy. And they don't get nothing to show for it. I don't even want to answer no questions, man"
And with that, Burrell got up; walked off the dais and out of the room to the locker room. I caught up with him before practice, and he said everything he said in the media room was genuine.
To hear the audio go to Lance's Blog at 1530 Homer, he posted a link!
I think Stanley might be ready for this... (gotta love the soundtrack!)

A Second Chance to Break the Chain!

Thanks to the snow wiping out the two prime nights of Restaurant Week last weekend, the restaurants involved have decided to extend the special menus one more week! This is great news and an excellent chance to give some of our area's best independently-owned establishments a try at a great value!
Damien Rice performs tonight!

Leonard Cohen tribute at induction into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Damien will be singing 'Hallelujah' as a tribute to one of his favourite artists, Leonard Cohen, at Cohen's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in New York City on Monday, 10 March 2008.
"If I were to float off in a balloon and were only allowed to bring the music of one artist, I would chose Leonard Cohen. Very few things in life are this clear to me." -Damien Rice
The event takes place at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and will be televised live in North America on VH1 Classic and MTV networks.
Vampire Weekend performed "M79" on SNL, and they added strings!
St. Patrick's Day an official holiday???!!!
I'm in! Guiness needs 1 Million petition signitures to take it to Congress. Go here to do your duty so I don't have to burn a vacation day every year to spend it at Haps and then end up like this guy...

Attention people of Cincinnati:
The entire city has been cancelled!

Kenton County
Hispanic Latino Job Fair Postponed to 3/16 (This is good news for those still waiting to get their fake documents!)

Stop Aids Pet Vet Day (I don't follow...)
Hamilton County
Cancelled
West Chester Outlaws (Who?)
Butler County
Banquet Cancelled
It also looks like God won't be hearing from Cincinnati tomorrow either because virtually every place of worship has cancelled services for tomorrow...
I don't get it... It's going on 5pm and I am getting ready to go to Xavier's final home game. The sun is out, it's not even snowing anymore, and my secondary street is easily driveable...
Speaking of Xavier, they're playing basketball tonight! Why wouldn't they? Let's hope Xavier fans are not afraid to get in their cars and go to the Cintas Center tonight, to cheer on their team and send off 3 seniors (all 1000 point scorers) who deserve one heck of an ovation for what they've done for their program!

'White Death!' 'White Death!'

So we here in Cincinnati are actually getting a legit snow fall today. The 'white death' has closed almost
everything. Traffic is a mess as just about every office and school let out at the same time. If we think
this is bad, check out this short slide show that documents Western New York's version of 'The White Death.'
Today's snow event is just another day for the people who live in that area.
Real 'White Death'
Vampire Weekend on Saturday Night Live!
If you have been an avid reader of 'the coolness' since we launched just a few weeks ago you have for sure
seen we are fans of the band Vampire Weekend. They were at the Gypsy Hut in Northside last month and and the
buzz for this band keeps growing. Vampire Weekend even won our inaugural Indie Rock Free Throws shooting contest,
which I am sure was a bigger thrill for them then getting asked to perform on SNL tomorrow night. I am pretty sure
they'll show up for the show anyway and it should be worth checking out.
For now, get your VW fix with this cool clip of them performing on the streets of Paris.
So it's Friday which means it is time to introduce our Cool Cincy Person of the Week...
(Actually it's two people this week)

Kate from the Dilly Deli is back with a Malbec selection for this week's cool Wine of the Week.

SAVED!(...just about)

After reading this link it is looking good for the best show on television, Friday Night Lights! Yeah!
So, I am sure most Xavier fans remember the New Year's Eve game in '03 when Creighton came to Cintas Center to play Xavier. A game that, for my money, is the best game ever played in the young arena's history. Kyle Korver was insane as he hit ridiculous 3's to put Creighton up by 1 late... only to see David West bank one in at the buzzer for the win.
So, in the 'what are you up to these days' category, David West was named NBA All-Star this year and Kyle Korver was traded to the Utah Jazz.
Who was cooler then and who is cooler now!?!

David West, former Xavier player, National College Kyle Korver, former Creighton player, now on the Utah Jazz.
Player of the year, and current NBA All-Star.
Inspiration!?
I'm sure Scarlett Johansson has inspired many boys in many ways...
Well she inspired a band called The Teenagers and the result is actually a really cool video and song.
Go to our Cool Music Video of the Week page to check it.

(FYI. At the Coolness we will at times post political material
for its entertainment value but in no way are we promoting one candidate over the
other. It's cool to vote though, so find your polling place and be cool today!)

If we were to endorse someone it would be Stephen Colbert! His take on all that is politics is just plain witty and hilarious! Check out this clip: Obama is a terrorist!!

"For me, nothing defines an area like restaurants, and eating at local places
is the ultimate gesture of supporting the local economy."-Michael Bauer SFGate.com

From Bella Luna on Eastern Ave.
Are you sometimes short of imagination and wait for tables at places like Applebees
or the Cheesecake Factory? Well, the Cincinnati area has some outstanding
independently owned restaurants that are being highlighted during restaurant week.

This article, where the above quote was taken, explores why people go to chains but should be seeking out independent establishments. This is especially true if you live in an area that has great places like Cincinnnati.
I love flying but I'm Just Saying...

A-10 Champs!

The Blue Blob leads the cheers Saturday night as Xavier got past George
Washington 66-56 at Cintas Center. Going into the game Xavier already knew they were
A-10 conference regular season champions thanks to a St. Louis upset over St. Joe's.
There were plans to cut down the nets after the game but because of the performance
the team didn't feel right about it. Still at 25-4 and now ranked #8 in the latest AP poll Xavier is
entering March with high hopes of making a big run in the NCAA tournament. There is good news that
Drew Lavender's ankle is better than it looked on Saturday as he practiced today. Also,
he did a 30 minute photo shoot to dawn the cover of an up coming Sports Illustrated
issue devouted to the NCAA Tournament. Dear SI curse, please spare the Muskies!
Finally the 25 wins marks the most regular season wins in the history of the Xavier
program. Regardless of what this month has in store, it has been a great year for Xavier and
we'll see how an already special team will define its legacy.
A collage in Ryan's Pub on the Xavier campus shows some historic moments in Xavier's past.
Xavier's win Saturday over George Washington was historic in its own right as it marked Xavier's 25th
win which is a new school regular season win total.

Superstition... After every game everyone who goes on my tickets must tap the
foot of the statue of D'Artagnan that sits in front of the Cintas Center.

"It's Bangin!"
Are you cool? Well, we think this guy is...

Introducing our first ever, 'You are so not Cool' Tool of the week:

Happy Leap Day

Cincinnati is at the center of national controversy, yet again.
I wouldn't say the controversy itself is all that cool, but Jim Borgman certainly is.

"I heard a Bono quote once that said 'Bands shouldn't break up over money, they should break up over track listing.' Nothing could be more pertinent at this point." -Chris Martin

I know these days some may no longer perceive Coldplay as cool, but it was my getting into this band before most people had ever heard of them that spurred my current music obsession. They are now putting together the final touches on their upcoming 4th studio album due out in May. Rolling Stone took an inside look into the process and this in-depth story resulted.
In the meantime, to get your Coldplay fix, go here to check out a great collection of videos.
It's a... RED SCARE CODE RED ALERT!

I am sure that by now everyone has seen the video Sarah Silverman made to taunt her boyfriend,
Jimmy Kimmel. Well, Jimmy struck back and it is pretty friggin' funny!

Go here to check it out, trust me it's worth it!
By far one of the coolest things I have done so far this year was to go to the Esquire last night
to check out the film Persepoles.

I am not sure why the website this picture came from cracks me up so much...

Go here to check it out for yourself!

"Quarterlife"

The internet show is coming to NBC tonight and I'm pretty excited about it.
Here is a good article about the history of the show.
"Let's go UC BOBCATS!?!?!?"

Yesterday at his rally on UC's campus, Barack Obama shouted, "Let's Go Bobcats!"
I guess he thought he was at Ohio U. instead of in Clifton....
That, or he was hanging with these people before the rally...

Less than 2 weeks ago Vampire Weekend played the Gypsy Hut in Northside.
This month's Spin Magazine makes them their cover boys and proclaims they
are "The Year's Best New Band...Already!?"

"Go you Blues"

Yakubu celebrates putting Everton up 1-0 in the first half at Manchester City.

Joleen Lescott gives credit to Lee Carsley for the assist on his brillant goal that put Everton up for good in their
2-0 victory that put them 3 points clear of city rival Liverpool for the 4th Champions League spot at the moment.

Stanley Burrell and his Muskies are now ranked #9 in the nation.
February 25, 2008-
...and the Winners are...
(Highlighting some of the winners from this weekend.)

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova won the Oscar
for Best Song with "Falling Slowly" from the hit indie film Once.

Diablo Cody got the Best Screenplay Oscar for Juno.

Linday Lohan took home 2 Worst Actrees Razzies for her dual role in I Know Who Killed Me.
(I'd link to it but trust me its not worth it!)
Marion Cotillard took home the Best Actress award for her stunning performance
in La Vie en Rose.

Tina Fey hosted SNL which achieved its best ratings in 2 years.

Tiger dominated... AGAIN!
Oh and Xavier beat the Flyers of Dayton... AGAIN!

Dayton native Derrick Brown knocks down a
shot for Xavier in their 57-51 win at UD Arena. The
win was the 10th straight for the Muskies.
February 22, 2008-
On this Date 28 years ago...

"Do you believe in Miracles?" I believe I am getting old if this happened 28 years ago but it still has to be one of the best stories in American sports history.
GOOD DAY CINCINNATI!
(Thought it would be nice to view a place I'd rather be than the icy mess I dealt with this morning.)

View of South Beach in Miami, Florida
Give props to all the newspaper carriers who are out there in the crappy weather making sure your dog can bring you the morning paper!

Props must go out to all die-hard Xavier fans who braved the 'White Death' and made the trek to Cintas Center last night to watch the #10 Muskies give Duquesne their worst beat down of their season: 75-48. The 48 points scored by the Dukes was 11 fewer than their previous low point tally in any game all year. The way Xavier is playing defense I think it will be a long Sunday afternoon for the UD Flyers who lost last night to (Don't Laugh) LaSalle. I don't care if the game is at UD Arena and the Flyer faithful arrive in those original "Beat Xavier" shirts. The Muskies should roll to their 10th straight win and their second straight season sweep of their envious rivals off 75 North.

Stanley Burrell dishes out one
of his career high 12 assists
last night in Xavier's 27 point
rout of Duquesne.
Check out this week's Cool Cincy Person of the week.
In case you missed it...

Kate Nash (pictured above) won the Brit award in the Best Female Artist category last night.
The Brit Awards are England's answer to the Grammy's and appear to be at least a bit more cool and a little less lame.
My vote in this category would have been for Bat For Lashes (seen below). She has one of the more mesmerizing voices I've heard in awhile.

The Foo took home the Best International Act award. Here is a full list of the winners.

Need a bottle of wine this weekend for that special occasion or just for the heck of it? Check out our Wine of the Week recommended by Kate of the Dilly Deli Wines and Gourmet.

They say the "White Death" is coming! Hide the women and children!

There is a possible life-line for the best show on television, as reported here.
Of course don't forget to go here to help save this show.
Hillary Clinton is in trouble now!

As if it could get any worse for the poor Senator from New York? I would say this is the endorsement Obama needed to put him over the top securing the Democractic Party nomination! Clinton's only hope might be an endorsement from the Phish Heads...

February 20th, 2008

I think the light bulb is finally going off for Josh Duncan of Xavier. He has made his last 15 shots, count'em 15 straight from the field in Xavier's last two road wins at Charlotte and Rhode Island.

There is no question that as good as Xavier is, any dreams they have of going to the final four will not occur without Josh Duncan bringing his "A" game. When he does he will most likely be the best player on the floor and he might finally be showing NBA scouts what they have thought they might see when he first entered Xavier as a freshman. Up next for #10 Xavier is a home game tomorrow night with the pesky Dukes from Duquesne, here is a good story from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette previewing the game.

I'm Just Saying...
February 19th, 2008-
There is a new movie coming out with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson. Here is an interview with the two about it.

February 18th, 2008-

So spring training is about to begin again for the Reds and as in past years I suspect there will be plenty of cautious optimism which is the most wonderful aspect of spring baseball. One of the silver linings of the demise of the Cincinnati Post was one of their sports reporters, C. Trent Rosecrans has taken a job with 1530 Homer and I am already addicted to his blog.
If you want to know all the skinny about the Reds this spring I am sure C. Trent will be your man. He also had one more goal than me for his winless broomball team and I hope our teams get to meet next season!
February 15th, 2008.
What's Cool this week:
Went to the Gypsy Hut in Northside for the first time to see NYC afro-punk band Vampire Weekend. Thought the venue was a bit tight but otherwise was very cool and the show rocked. Expect to hear about this band as one of the biggest 'buzz' bands of 2008. They closed with my fav song of theirs 'Wolcott', check it out here as performed in Toronto a couple nights earlier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihE3yPSrOw8.

Me on the right with my girlfriend Ashley and buddy Colin at the Gypsy Hut.
How about the Muskies! They keep finding different ways to win. Props to Josh Duncan's performance. What was not cool was that the game wasn't televised anywhere? How can the #12 team in the nation not be on TV when playing in a big market like Charlotte against another team vying for a NCAA bid? I hope who ever takes over for Linda Bruno as A-10 commish addresses this issue... Chat about Xavier and their drive to the Final Four in San Antonio at www.musketeermadness.com.
