LET'S GO NEW LOOK REDS! WRECK THE BREW CREW!

I root for the Reds except when they play the Mets.  Well, the games this weekend here at G.A.B.P. are huge for the Mets because they cling to a 1 game lead in the wild card over the Brewers.  The next 3 games here in Cincinnati are the most important games the Reds will play this season. So, if you have tickets, don't let them sit in your drawer! Use them and go cheer on the new-look Reds, who incidently have been one of the quieter, hotter teams in baseball.  Cheer for the Reds to help the Mets! :)

Here is your FUNKY FRIDAY music video COOL CLIP...

The Cool Kids-'Delivery Man'

It's been a crazy week around here and it's time to get the weekend started right!  The Cool Kids are our favorite funky duo of 2008 and here is their latest video, 'Delivery Man.'  People who know me will also know why I have an affinity for the title of this song...

 THE AFTERNOON WATER COOLER!

"Please give everyone in Cincinnati their power back and

please don't let the Mets blow it again in September."

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

Ra Ra Riot-'Ghost Under Rocks' (Live on Conan O'brien)

Ra Ra Riot formed in 2006 in Syracuse and played where ever they could around the campus there.  They quickly built a reputation with their outstanding, energetic live shows, and it's been a meteoric ride ever since including stops at CMJ music fest, SXSW, and they've even played studio sessions right here in Cincy at WOXY. Their first full length album released last month on Barsuk is called The Rhumb Line.  After learning more about this band, which has lived through the tragedy of their orginal drummer drowning, I look forward to the chance (hopefully soon) to see them perform.  For now, enjoy their network television debut.

20 years ago tonight, here was the box score from the Reds game...

Check out Drive-By Truckers live from the Paradiso!

If you read this site on a regular basis, then you know we're excited about seeing the opening night of the Drive-By Truckers/The Hold Steady tour kicking off in Louisville next month, and most of that excitment is for The Hold Steady.  Well, the more I listen to Drive-By Truckers, the more I become equally thrilled about seeing them, too.  Here is a great preview: a full set from their appearance in Amsterdam last month courtesy of Fabchannel!

MidPoint Music Festival is fast approaching and Nate Rosing has created a cool blog with everything you need to know.  Along with all the in-depth info is a cool interview with local singer/songwriter Ryan Adcock.

The Coen Brothers and an amazing cast make 'Burn After Reading'

a great dark comedy with all the trimmings... Worth checking out!

Fortunately, I had a bottle of Kate's latest Wine Pick to help me make it through the darkness...

****WE'RE BACK (Part Two)****

Hurricane Ike (of all things) knocked out our power for 2 days,

but I suppose it could have been worse.

Hopefully, if you're reading this your power is back on too.

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

Noah and the Whale-'5 Years Time'

I figured we'd start today with a happy, reflective song after a couple days in the dark.  In one of the most interesting and quirky videos I've seen in some time, Noah and the Whale bring us '5 Years Time.'  Chances are if you've been to Europe this summer, you found it hard to avoid this tune! Now the band from London is bringing it to our shores as today is the U.S. release of their smash debut album, 'Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down.'  One viewing of this video will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over! Fortunately, it is not a song U.S. radio can kill because it doesn't fit the limited model necessary for a radio hit, but I do expect this song to be in a movie or T.V. show you'll see very soon...

****WE'RE BACK!!!****

Our site had some technical difficulties, thanks for your patience!

Here is your FUNKY FRIDAY music video COOL CLIP...

Mark Morrison-'Return of the Mack'

After a one year hiatus due to the writer's strike, which was far worse than our two day hiatus, Entourage returned last Sunday with a great new episode.  Incuded in the episode was this song, 'Return of the Mack' which is as funky as they come and one of my all time favorite songs.  It's even my 'take off' song!  Whenever I fly, I cue this song on my ipod right when we begin our roll out, I love the adrenaline rush!  Anyway, this song will get your weekend on rolling out with a groove, and don't miss the next Entourage this Sunday night!

Hey Bengal fans, don't end up like this guy because they're crackin' down!

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

French Kicks-'So Far We Are'

A few years ago I saw French Kicks open for Keane in Columbus and thought they sounded pretty good, it's always cool when you go to see a show of a band you like and an opening band makes a lasting impression.  This band is from Brooklyn via D.C.   Their sound is a bit post punk with a melodic twist and my friend Jessica thought they were pretty hot for what that's worth?  They take the stage at the Southgate House on Monday September 22 in what I am sure will be a great sounding set.

 THE AFTERNOON WATER COOLER

Kate gives us a double shot this week

with her latest wine pick!

Sarah Palin arrives at Lunken around 4P.M. today, here's a funny video to welcome her with.

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

Matt and Kim-'Yea Yeah'

When watching this video it pretty much mirrors what I wanted to throw at the TV watching the Bengals and especially Carson Palmer play yesterday. (He's my fantasy football QB) In any event Matt & Kim are from Brooklyn, NY and have a nice catchiness to them, something Chad Ocho Cinco did not have... They are fun live and I am sorry we missed them at Lollapalooza but fear not! On Tuesday, 11/18 they will be at the Mad Hatter in Covington and I am sure it will be a show worth checking out!

The Reds at least beat the Cubs!  "1908! 1908! 1908!"

Football was not friendly to Cincinnati this weekend.  With the Bearcats crushing loss at Oklahoma and the Bengals debacle in Baltimore, but hey, at least the Reds sent all those Cubs fans back to Chicago frustrated after a 3 run rally in the ninth gave the Reds a 4-3 win not to mention a series win 2 out of 3!

The Cool Corner is looking forward to Oktober...

Kate will be bringing us a Cool Wine Pick...and possibly some other goodies?

The Bengals open their season in Baltimore against Willie Anderson and with Chad Ocho Cinco.  Might we be hearing from Joel again?

Here is your FUNKY FRIDAY music video COOL CLIP...

Maxwell-'Sumthin sumthin' (Live @ The Apollo 1996!)

Wow!  It's Friday already, gotta love those short weeks!  Anyway, I got an email update showing that Maxwell was coming to the Taft this fall and thought to myself, there's a blast from the past.  Then I found this video of Maxwell @ The Apollo from 1996 and it did bring back my memories of actually seeing this and going out and buying his CD.  He's talented and hopefully still getting it done, nonetheless this video was when he was definately getting it done, have a great weekend!

Kate in Wine Country and other places...

If you haven't been to Kate's Cool Wine Pick page this week, what are you waiting for?  The latest posts are from her 2 week adventure across the country that included stops at some amazing wineries.  The best is, there's more to come!

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

Snow Patrol-'Open Your Eyes'

Snow Patrol is one of the absolutely coolest bands in the world who you've probably heard of but don't fully understand just how cool they are. You can now hear their newest single from their newest album coming out October 27th.  This video is amazing. If you haven't watched many of these Wake Up Videos, please watch this one.  It is the climatic song 'Open Your Eyes' from their last album set to a short French film made in 1978 during the early morning on the streets of Paris... Stunning!

September 3, 2008

If the Pirates beat the Reds to snap a 10 game losing streak but nobody was there, does anyone care?

Ian Snell leads Pittsburgh to a 3-2 win over the Reds in front of very few last night.

As another Reds losing season hits September, word was there were only about 5000 souls in GABP last night.  If you want 2 good tickets to the Reds vs. Cubs this Friday night, contact us! But you must root for the Reds as we will not contribute further to Cub nation taking over Cincinnati this weekend...

"1908! 1908! 1908!"

Natalie Portman proves again why she's cool...

Alison Becker is coming to Cincinnati!

VH1's Top 20 countdown, which airs Saturday mornings and is hosted by VJ Alison Becker, will be taping here in Cincinnati this week for their September 13th episode.  City leaders decided to capitalize on 3 Doors Down's big summer video which was shot in Cincinnati and wooed VH1 to come do their show here.  It just so happens that 3 Doors Down is playing Riverbend and of course Alison Becker will feature them for the show.  Still, expect many of Cincinnati's landmarks to be featured with a special focus on the revitalization of downtown, which will be positive exposure for the city.  Please go here, though, and vote for anyone other than Daughtry for the #1 video because it will ruin an otherwise cool Cincinnati moment!

Gavin & Stacey!

While most people were all excited for the return of 90210 last night, which by most accounts bombed, the real surprise television debut was Gavin and Stacey on BBC America.  The show, airing Tuesdays at 8:40PM, is a comedy that revolves around an undeniable romance between the two lead characters and their interaction with their hilarious family and friends.  Gavin and Stacey, which is already a sensation in England, is also winning critics in the States, including this review from the L.A. Times.

Here is your WAKE UP music video COOL CLIP...

TV On The Radio-'Staring at the Sun'

TV On The Radio are an incredible live act and they will be coming to Bogarts on Saturday, October 18th.  October is shaping up to be one busy month around here with great tours coming into our area.  Here is the video and song that pretty much got it all going for this band from New York.

The Hold Steady-'Stay Positive' (Live on Conan)

The world's best band, The Hold Steady, dropped by Conan the other night and gave a 'positive' performance.  They are off to Europe before coming back to the States to tour with Drive-by Truckers starting October 30th in Louisville.  Got your tickets yet?  Anyway, this will kick start the short week in fine form!

How are you spending your pre-Labor Day Sunday in Cincinnati? Where are you setting up to get a great view of the WEBN fireworks? Let us know!

Ashley is particularly excited about checking out Andy's Mediterranian Grille because their Restaurant Week menu sounds utterly delicious!

HAPPY 50TH MICHAEL JACKSON!

Get ready for some more Drama!

Entourage is returning to HBO on Sunday, September 7th and now the $12 a month I spend on that channel may be worth it again! Here is a good place to catch some clips of the upcoming season.

(*A note to Cincinnati doushbags: Please don't parade around town like you're the guys from Entourage... you're not.  When you do, it ruins what [for me] has been an enjoyable show.)

Here is your Funky Friday music video COOL CLIP...

Jon Justice Band-'Bag a Day Habit' (Live)

It's Friday heading into Labor Day weekend, who would have thought it would be here so quick?  Jon Justice Band is from Cincinnati and though at first they look too young to be belting and jamming that incredible blues sound with a twist of funk and soul, they pull it off with perfection!  Here is a clip from a gig in Dayton earlier this summer.  Looks like you can catch them Wednesday's at the Southgate House, and they'll pop up a few other places around town next month... places like the Midpoint Music Festival.

August 28, 2008

Here is your Wake Up music video COOL CLIP...

Rachael Yamagata-'Be Be Your Love' (live @Austin City Limits)

Rachael Yamagata, if you don't know, is a talented singer/songwriter out of New York City who has one of the most seductive voices you'll ever hear.  A friend gave me the heads up that she will be coming to Bogarts on November 3rd.  Someone is going to have to make me break my Bogarts boycott at some point, right?!?  This clip shows her live at the 2006 Austin City Limits festival and she has a new album coming out October 7th.

The Seinfeld bus is coming!

And now for a real schedule!

I felt sorry for U.C. fans last week when they announced their up-coming schedule... What a snore-fest until they get to the Big East.  Xavier's new schedule will keep them challenged and make their November/December games more exciting ones!

I like Mike DeCourcy's take on the Gold Medal counts in Beijing!

(Thanks Lance an Mo!)

Will Rent be the next Rocky Horror Picture Show?

One of the best Broadway musicals of all time is finally coming to a close on Broadway in early September after an amazing 12 year run.  One of the final performances will be filmed and released as a limited run movie September 24-28.  Here are more details.  Looks like we can catch it around here at Newport on the Levee, the new Delux theater in Florence, or Showcase Western Hills.  This is exciting because, though they made a movie version that made a good effort, it didn't come close to replicating the stage performance.  Do you see people in the theaters up and singing all these songs and dressing up the parts for years to come?

Here is your Wake Up music video COOL CLIP...

The Faint-'The Geeks Were RIght'

The Faint are one of those geeky artists founded by the  Saddlecreek label out of Omaha along with Bright Eyes (or is it Conor Oberst), Neva Dinova, and The Good Life to name a few.  These geeks put out some awesome music and have helped turn Omaha into one of the most influential cities in America for music.  This song and video are somewhat fitting...
