88-Keys>>True Feelings

Charles Misodi Njapa, better known by his stage name 88-Keys, is an American record producer and rapper.  Since his days as an assistant engineer, 88’ has produced records for numerous artists including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Macy Gray, Musiq Soulchild and Consequence. Recently, 88' extended beyond his production credits to highlight his skills on the mic as MC, singer and collaborator, most notably on his solo debut album The Death of Adam released on November 11, 2008. Executively produced by 88's close friend Kanye West,[6] the concept album tells the story of a man named Adam who has been murdered in a loft apartment in Harlem.[7] In August 2008 a fifteen-track mixtape titled, Adam's Case Files, was released as a prequel to The Death of Adam. The album's first single titled "Stay Up! (Viagra)" was officially released through iTunes on September 9, 2008. In December 2008, 88' was highlighted as Spin Magazines' Artist of the Day.[8]

The snow is gone and there is a great reason to get out tonight.  Boston band Passion Pit will be at Northside Tavern.  Passion Pit has quickly become one of the biggest buzz bands of 2009 and as I predicted here earlier they could become this year's Vampire Weekend.  Buzz or not, it's pretty cool when we get a band to come to town before they potentially completely blow up and tonight is one of those rare opportunities.  Check out this live performance by Passion Pit at New York's Bowery Ballroom from last fall for their song 'I've Got Your Number.'

Meiko>>Boys With Girlfriends

Meiko is an American singer/songwriter from Georgia who went to L.A. and released her debut album on her own without the help of a record label in 2007.  Amazingly the album garnered success on itunes and even topped the folk charts of intunes.  Now, with a record deal inked, Meiko has continued amazing success and this song, which is her latest release, has become one of the biggest songs of the year.  You may have caught her here last year as part of the Hotel Cafe Tour and expect her to be all about again in '09, including SXSW in March.

Angus and Julia Stone>>Just A Boy

Angus and Julia Stone are a brother & sister duo from Austrailia.  They started in 2006 playing opening mike nights around the northern beaches of Sydney and quickly found themselves making the festival rounds to support their successful debut EP.   They then brought their music to the U.K. where more critical acclaim and attention found them.  They worked with the likes of Travis, and toured with David Gray.  2009 will see Angus and Julia Stone finally releasing a full length album here in the U.S. and they will be embarking on a U.S. tour this spring with Brett Dennen.  Their sound is soothing yet fractured in a indie folk like way.

If I can beg everyone... Please! Please! Please! Watch this show...

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

I can't beg you any better than Lance McAlister...

Thursday night was the final episode of season three on Direct TV.
Season three now moves to NBC starting this Friday at 9pm
.
I beg you to watch the show.
1. It's an incredible show 2. If you don't, I fear it will go away.
I know I rave about a lot of TV show...and I really like "24".
But this show is really so much better than anything else on TV that I can't do it justice. If you were to watch only one show I've ever talked about, make it this one.
It's not as much a football show as a show about life experiences in a small town that has a passion for football. In fact, last night's episode did not have any game action. The writing, character development and storylines are simply outstanding. The show deals with coaching kids, pressures of winning, pressure of peers, growing up, relationships of parents and kids, boyfriend/girlfriend, decisions on college.....
The characters are believable and better developed than any TV show I have ever watched. The coach and his wife are really, really good.....as is Matt the QB.
As the status of Coach Taylor's job played out last night, I found myself thinking what Kelly and I would do in that situation. The last scene of the night (see picture)was amazing.
      Here is an
interview a former intern of my show did with the Executive Producer.Don't read if you haven't watched the final episode.
Here is a recap of last night if you missed it.
Friday night, 9pm, NBC. Give it a shot

Mitch Davis is Orba Squara a New York singer/songwriter who's first album, Sunshyness has furnished songs for Apple iPhone commercials and movies such as 'Wedding Daze.'  In fact, 9 out of the 10 songs on the album have been licensed for commercial use.  Orba Squara's music features organic instruments like the mandolin, sitar, and ukulele.  This particular video was made by a fan which is a practice encouraged by the artist.  Dubbed the new 'Moby' it appears this unique talent is someone we have all been listening too without even knowing it.

Ladyhawke>>My Delirium

Phillipa "Pip" Brown, better known as Ladyhawke is a singer/songwriter from New Zealand.  She finally has gone solo with her latest effort after spending years bouncing around with a few bands that got some modest attention.  Ladyhawke splashed big with her single, 'Paris is Burning' last summer and released a self titled album in Australia in September.  Expect a U.S. release sometime soon.  Her sound is interesting.  There is a definite punk influence in her new wave/electropop sound as she is said to be influenced by The Clash and Iggy and the Stooges.  She also mentions playing CBGB's with her former band as a 'defining' moment.  This is just a hunch but expect to hear much more from Ladyhawke her in the U.S. in 2009.

Scanning the list of new albums that came out today, the most notable in my mind was the new release by The Derek Trucks Band, Already Free.  This is a well shot clip from New York City of the band performing the Bob Dylan cover of 'Down In The Flood' which also happens to be the lead track on the new album.  If you've ever had the chance to see DTB live before, you know you witness one of the best guitar players of this generation, if not all time.  Lucky for us here in Cincy, the band is kicking off a world tour in February and one of the first stops is at Bogarts on February 12th.
