The Go! Team-'Ms. Pacman'
3 weeks from today we'll be leaving for Lollapalooza and the schedule is now out! It's fun but sometimes frustrating when looking over the schedule because there are so many bands and artists worth watching that overlap. It's just impossible to see them all. Still, it is an amazing opportunity to see so many awesome shows over a 3 day span. One act I am sure to catch on Friday afternoon is The Go! Team. This fun and funky U.K. group full of high energy has put a fresh hook into an old school sound and it works! This video is a perfect example. (Seeing Ms. Pacman being chased by the ghosts through the streets of New York...Classic!)

Ohio is doing something pretty cool...
"According to The New York Times, the Ohio plan, called the Ohio GI Promise, is the first of its kind in the nation. It will make all veterans "honorary Ohioans," changing residency requirements at the state's 36 colleges and universities to allow veterans, their spouses and dependents to attend at in-state tuition rates, regardless of where they currently reside."
It sounds like 'Borat' is at it again? Beware America!

There is a "Johnson" front headed for Cincinnati, I'm Just Saying...

Bon Iver-'Flume'
Bon Iver is the name given to the latest music project by Justin Vernon. I have had his album on shuffle on my ipod for about a month now and it is really growing on me. There are a ton of guys out there strumming guitars and singing well crafted lyrics who never get on the radar but one listen to this live in-studio performance will open your ear to a sound which, with good reason, has garnered tremendous critical acclaim in '08 for the album titled, For Emma, Forever Ago. Most of For Emma was recorded over a four month period in a cabin in Wisconsin. His voice and lyrics are so delicate yet so powerful, and that combination is hard to pull off successfully. Give it a listen and see if you agree? You can catch him opening for Wilco in Indianapolis on August 4th.

Meet our latest Cincycoolness.com, "You're So NOT Cool," TOOL of the Week!
Bill Conley

So it's been a bad week for our friends up 75 North in Dayton as you will see with this guy and the guy below. Mr. Conley, pictured here, reportedly stabbed himself after he and a lady friend ran out of alcohol. Go here for the full story... "What a tool!"
Man from Dayton fakes heart attack in court...
Caught this story the other day about this man from Dayton pulling the fake heart attack bit while representing himself in court and laughed really, really hard. Well, he may be wishing he wasn't faking because he got a 42 year sentence. Here is the latest update to this shameless story...
Here is your Wake Up music video Cool Clip...
Missy Higgins-'Ten Days'
I figured since we are ten days away from Missy Higgins coming to Cincinnati via The Madison in Covington, KY on July 18th, that it would only be fitting to play the video of her song 'Ten Days'. This was one of her smash hits in Australia on her first full length record, 'Sound Of White.' The best part is tickets are only $15 and it's a Friday night! If you are going and we don't know you, contact us here and we might be able to get you a free ticket...

DOG OFF!

Here is the latest Great American sports hero, Joey Chestnut! In one of the most under-appreciated annual sporting events in the world held every July 4th weekend, The Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, Chestnut used a late rally to tie the legendary Japanese Hot Dog eating champion, Kobayashi, forcing a first ever dog off! During the overtime period, it was all Joey and he took the title! Congrats Joey!
Carson Palmer failed to qualify...

Why Carson? Why!?
First Step!

Fomer Musketeer Stanley Burrell made the Indiana Pacers Summer league team yesterday, which will be competing in Orlando, Florida in his quest to earn a permanent roster spot. Though still a longshot, he has already made it further than many thought he would. This is just a hunch, but I think 'Stan the Man' is going to make it, just as another former muskie 'Stan the Man' did almost 20 years ago when Stan Kimbrough made the World Champion Detroit Pistons in 1989! Click here for a story about his quest.
IN SYNC!

Marty Brennaman, Reds radio legend and Hall of famer.
Are you one who likes to turn down the sound on your TV during Reds games and turn on the
radio and listen to WLW's broadcast? If so, you are in luck because WLW has now built in a delay to match that of the television broadcast. Click here for full story.

Steve Winwood-'Roll With it' (live 1988)
I know many readers of 'The Coolness' are looking forward to rockin' out with the legendary
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tomorrow night but don't forget the special treat that is
opening, Steve Winwood. A legend in his own right and one of the more unsung musical
talents in history, Winwood was part of classic bands like Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group, and Blind Faith. In the late 80's, he came back with a smash solo project that produced great tunes like 'Higher Love,' 'Back in the High Life,' and this one, 'Roll With It.' Roll to Riverbend early enough tomorrow night so you don't miss what I am sure will be an entertaining opening set!

Here is your FOURTH OF JULY Wake Up video Cool Clip...
Sandlot-'Fourth of July'
I know earlier in the week we celebrated the fact Bull Durham, the best baseball movie ever made, turned 20. Well the second best baseball movie ever and the most under appreciated is The Sandlot. This 2 1/2 minute scene is fantastic. "There was only one night game a year." Oh and Ray Charles singing in the back ground... goose bumps! Happy Fourth of July!

Embrace-'Gravity'
This is one of my all time favorite songs and quite possibly the best song Chris Martin of
Coldplay has ever penned? Martin gave this song to Embrace because he felt it was more them, and well, they embraced it. It became a huge hit a few of years ago and sparked a comeback for this U.K. band that back in 2000 Coldplay actually opened for.
BRUCE is BACK! With 2 homers last night and so is JOEL with his latest REDS' RANT! Coincidence?

Xavier Rudd-Live
Last week we introduced the amazing Fabchannel.com which is a website that simulcasts and archives entire shows from clubs mostly in Amsterdam, Netherlands. There are many amazing shows to check out on the site and this one by Xavier Rudd is one of the best. If you have never experienced a live gig by Mr. Rudd, then you must check him out here. Not only does he have a cool name, Xavier, but the Aussie is pretty much a one man band playing multiple instruments at the same time, including the didgeridoo! His songs are uplifting, and inspired mostly by the theme of peace and happiness.
and later today...
DUFFY! MERCY!

That's right, live on Fabchannel today at 2:30PM Cincinnati time Duffy will be live from Amsterdam!
Inspired by Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark.Amy, the soulful pop music of Ann Duffy brings you straight back to the 60's. The singer from Wales is known for her amazing melodic voice, which is often compared to that of Amy Winehouse.
Duffy was born in 1984 in a small village called Nefyn in Wales. When she was a teenager she played in many local bands. In 2003 she participated in Wawffactor, an alternative version of Pop Idol. Duffy finished second. Duffy appeared on Later with Jools Holland in 2007 and Polydor signed the talented singer. Shortly after her breakthrough was a fact.
In March 2008 Duffy released her debut album 'Rockferry' which immediately topped the UK and many other European charts. 'Mercy', one of the singles taken from this album, was good for many number 1 listings and a MOJO Award for 'Song of the Year' in 2008.

Here is another little Reds item until Joel returns to Reds' Rant...Valentin for Bruce???
Ah Dumbsty!
From Mo's Blog!
Last week marked the 20th Anniversary of the release of Bull Durham, the best baseball movie ever made. Since we are going back 20 years today with Mellencamp, I thought we'd relive one of the many great scences from this classic, "Ideas!" Timeless!
Things might be strange at THE COOL CORNER???
Here is your Wake Up music video Cool Clip...
John Mellencamp 'Paper In Fire'
I came across some old John Mellencamp CD's yesterday going through my collection and it
reminded me of some good times at his shows over the years. This was his best ever video
in my opinion. Johnny 'don't call me Cougar' and his band will be at Riverbend this month on the 23rd with Lucinda Williams. If you have never been to a Mellencamp show, he always tours with one of the best back up bands you'll find, and you'll leave exhausted!

Until we get Joel's next Reds' rant, this will have to do! Too funny!
Hitler discusses the Cincinnati Reds
Meet our latest, "YOU'RE SO NOT COOL" Tool of the Week!

Meet Jeffrey Barrier. The Ohio man allegedly used a cell phone camera to snap photos of a naked woman at a tanning salon Saturday and then hid the phone in his anus in a bid to thwart police. When cops later confronted Barrier, "he kept denying any involvement of the incident" and claimed to not have a camera. However, a second search of the suspect turned up the camera. As noted in a Hamilton County Sheriff's Office report, Barrier "did hide evidence in his anus." Barrier, pictured in the above mug shot, was charged with disorderly conduct for taking the photos and obstructing official business for hampering a police investigation. Barrier, due in court today, is free on $1500 bond.
Over at The Cool Corner you will find a delightful failure...

This week's Cool Wine Pick from Kate will make you wonder, is she naked?!

Missy Higgins-'Peachy'
When I drove by the Madison Theater in Covington on Friday night and saw 'Missy Higgins July 18' on the marquee, I almost wrecked my car. Missy Higgins has been one of my very favorite artists for several years and I have tried to make plans to see her live a few times but it hasn't worked out. Well now this talented indie singer/songwriter from Australia is headlining a tour here in the U.S. and will be on stage Friday night, July 18th in Covington and tickets are only $15! You will be sure to hear more about this event as it nears on this website because in case you can't tell, I'm pretty darn excited about it!

Persepolis
Looking for something different on DVD this weekend?
Persepolis is a film we saw at the Esquire a few months ago and it was one of the best films of the year, it was even nominated for an Oscar! In the theater it was in French and subtitled in English. There is now an English version available on DVD. Give it a try, it won't disappoint!
MPAA RATING: PG-13 for mature thematic material including violent images, sexual references, language and brief drug content
Starring Catherine Deneuve, and Chiara Mastroianni
Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of the precocious and outspoken 9-year-old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power--forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, Marjane outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable. (Sony Classics)

Yelle-'Je Veux Te Voix'
Yelle, a feminised acronym for "You Enjoy Life," is French electopop dance music singer Julie Budet whose music is 80's influenced. I have no idea what she is singing about and I don't care because the cool dresses, cool heels, and cool dancing are enough for me! This is such a workout it would make Oliva Newton-John seem not so physical...

If someone wears this jacket in your video, it's Cool!
It's been awhile since we have nominated a Cool Music Video of the Week though we post cool
music videos just about every day. However, when I saw the new video by M83 this week and the lead guy in the video wearing a Roy Hobbs jacket from The Natural, that alone was enough for us to give it the Cool Video nod. It doesn't hurt that the song is quite catchy and the video is overall very moving as well. M83 are a French electronic fused band lead by Anthony Gonzalez and their 80's influenced tunes are fun and will get under your skin in a good way. Check out the video for 'Graveyard Girl' here!
Here is our Cincycoolness.com, Cool Person of the Week!

Heather Mitts from Cincinnati and members of the U.S. Women's National Team heading to Beijing to compete in the Olympics recently were on The Price is Right. Gremlins tell us she also might be stopping by Hugo in Oakley tonight for dinner...
Hilarious Sports Video of the Day and commentary from barstoolsports.com.
You have no idea how much it would make my day if this ever happened to one of the jerkoffs I get stuck behind every day on my way work. These self-serious fitness freaks with their bikes that cost more than my car with their spandex suits that cost more than the contents of my closet and are so tight you can tell what religion they are. And making me dodge them while I'm paying four flippin' bucks a gallon for use of the flippin' road. Hope you're lucky enough to land on your $700 helmet, Roadkill.
But I'm not bitter. To quote Oscar Wilde, "It would take a heart of stone not to laugh." The only thing that would make it funnier is Benny Hill music.
Did you miss it? Coldplay performed '42' off their new album on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night. You can go here to watch it for yourself...

Josh Ritter-Live in concert from Amsterdam
No, this isn't just one song. This is an entire feed of a fantastic Josh Ritter show from Amsterdam, the Netherlands! Fabchannel.com, which is now my new favorite website does live webcasts from the Paradiso and Melkweg music clubs in Amsterdam, and then archives most of them for our viewing pleasure... over 800 in all! They are unedited and complete; you feel like you are right there in Amsterdam in these small clubs watching some of the greatest artists of this decade! In fact, Elbow will be live on Fabchannel.com today performing at the Paradiso at 2:30PM Cincinnati time. Elbow, the UK band whose music kind of falls somewhere between Radiohead and Coldplay, are enjoying supporting their fourth and most critically acclaimed album of their careers, "Seldom Seen Kid." I am looking forward to checking out how this band performs live! Click on the image below at 2:30Pm today and you can check them out, too. Or, go now and check out more of this website's amazing archived selection!

I want to thank Ashley for helping keep the Coolness current while I was out of town. I have to say I was impressed by all the Reds fans that were at Yankee Stadium this weekend, they were everywhere. The young Reds pitchers also gave the Yankees notice that the future for the Reds could be closer than the images that appear in your rear view mirrow. I also had the pleasure while in New York to catch a show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on West 26th Street. The next time you find yourself in NYC I highly recommend stoping by this tiny theater filled with some of the best emerging comedy/sketch/improv performers. There are usually several shows a night and it only costs $8.

The Black Angels-'Sniper At The Gates of Heaven'
Tonight, The Black Angels perform at the Southgate House and the Austin, Texas band is known
for their intense guitar drone jams. They also will be in the lounge at woxy today at 2:30PM. Also playing the woxy lounge today at noon is local band Seabird. Speaking of Seabird, they
are releasing their debut album this Friday, June 27th in cool fashion by playing a live show on
The Belle of Cincinnati. You can book your spot by clicking on the image below:

Once again, Jim is out of town (in NYC at the Reds/Yankees game) and I have been left in charge of the Coolness. Now, if you recollect the long weekend during the NCAA championship and Xavier/Jim's trip to Arizona when I was last left in charge, you may be shaking your head and rolling your eyes (or you may be having an epileptic seizure). BUT I promise to attempt to make Jim's absence unnoticable.

there are a few places in Cincy that could benefit from the Reverse Graffiti Project...
