An Ode to October

Today, Cincinnati.com's Community Press reminded us not to give in to our baser nature and set shit on fire. Mister Ike left a tremendous amount of debris (i.e. moderately pointy shingles, really large branches, and trees... whole f-ing trees) from his trip through the BluegrassBuckeye, and Keystone State last week. Never in my life did I ever think I could say, "I lived through a hurricane," but technically, I can. Did Cincinnati withstand 80+ MPH gusts, torrents of rain, or crushing waves? Well, no... But as I've already made a notch in my Inclemental Weather Belt, no backsies. Nonetheless, with all the dry, seemingly perfect kindling and the understandable amount of time it will take to properly clean up our littered city, heed the Community Press! Hamilton County's PR coordinator for the Dept. of Environmental Services discussed the dangers of publicly burning your brush. Personally, we were lucky not to have much (if any) tempting, burnable bits land within our yard. However, I do think it's absolutely indispensable to have a fire pit or grill. On this Autumnal Euquinox, remember that though summer has passed, winter is not yet here! There is much Fall Coolness to enjoy... Let's go find it.

Gemeuchlichkeit mit deinem Zinzinnati Oktoberfest! ([sic] Click on the doggie!)

Friday, 05 September, 2008

Summer in Cincinnati is "officially" over now that WEBN has let go of their control over the Ohio River. This means that Autumn's Oktoberfest is coming at us! You should start your Oktoberfestivities in Covington today at the Goose Girl Fountain at 6pm. The opening ceremonies of MainStrasse's Oktoberfest will be followed by several musical performances including the Dan Varner Band, Amnesia Lane, Big Whiskey, and the Badbuden Band. In addition to the music, the six block festival features international foods and drinks. It's also family friendly, so bring along little Peter or Susie! Get em' young, I always say. You probably won't see us at MainStrasse this year, but stay tuned to where we will be rockin' our Oktoberfestivus...

I'm pretty beat after a jam-packed weekend in my favorite Midwest city, Chicago, IL, but I wanted to jot down the performances we caught at Lolla this year:

  • Cat Power
  • The Raconteurs
  • The Cool Kids
  • Radiohead
  • Devotchka
  • Serena Ryder
  • Jamie Lidell
  • Battles
  • Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
  • Wilco
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Eli "Paperboy" Reed & the True Loves
  • Flogging Molly
  • Gnarls Barkley
  • The National

All that, and if you can believe it, there were a handful of bands that I didn't get to see! It was souper silly crowded, too, but we'll get into that later in the week... Have a great Tuesday, Cincy!

In honor of Lolla week, a look back at one of the best performances of last year's fest:

I cannot even begin to tell you all the ways in which I adore I Can Has Cheezburger and their cousin site, Fail Blog, but perhaps I can give you an idea...

The folks over at McSweeney's Internet Tendency are on holiday this week, but sifting through their extensive archives reminded me of this fanciful bit from Michael Ian Black, whom I have repeatedly lauded on this site.

This is a combination of two delightfully 80s pieces of Pop Culture...

Thank you BoingBoing!

Also from BoingBoing today:

Do they remind you of anything you may have seen (or stepped on) last month?
